Not a bad deal on a Canadian SIM card...

On the way up to Ruth's dad's place yesterday, we stopped at the off leash dog park. This is a really popular place for dogs to be running around loose and playing with other dogs. I'm pretty sure that many people come here every day to give themselves and their pups some exercise.

It was a little chilly, but after all it is only mid April...and we are in Canada!

It was overcast and the high was only about 8C (47F).

Chester with his friends.

Chester, Sadie, Lindsey, Cameron, and Ruth.

The (Canadian) Mississippi River at Galetta.

Across from Ruth's dad's house is the Mississippi River. No, not the big one! Just the little one up here in Canada!

And the water level sure is high...

The river is a little bit high!

Lots of people up at Ruth's dad's house. He's got visitors from England! Ruth's cousin Clive and his family are visiting, so there's not much room at the inn.

Ruth's brother Colin, cousin Clive, father Tony, and Chester the dog!
Yep...Chester is only five months old. He's a good lap dog, isn't he?

Everybody pitched in to make a delicious Easter dinner. Ruth and Lindsey did up a roast leg of lamp and a roast chicken...

15 people at the table!

Reader Bob had chimed in on yesterday's blog post and mentioned that 7-Eleven stores here in Canada sell a cellular pay as you go SIM card. I looked it up, and sure enough it's the best deal I've seen for Canada. It's called 7-Eleven SpeakOut Wireless if you want to google it.

But, there are no more 7-Eleven stores in the Ottawa area.

They have a special on until May 2nd. You pay $100 (plus taxes and shipping! Total comes to $117), and they send you a SIM card with $125 worth of credit on it. Then, you buy a calling package that doesn't expire, and add monthly data packages as you need it. I'm hoping that the $117 we paid for it will last me the entire summer season! That would come to $23.40 per month, and I'm okay with that.

So I ordered one online. Should be here by the end of the week.

Good deal on a nice hammock...

And in Canada, the oversize Coleman Camping chair is finally on sale at a great price...

  1. I've been on SpeakOut for years - wish you were passing through, I have one of their extra sim cards! I buy the $100 deal whenever it's on and it s lasts me several months on the $35 plan... I could likely be on the $30 pan but just in case I keep it at $35 - your online account will show you your usage and it's pretty accurate... but it won't show you individual details, just your overall usage (what % you have left of your plan).

    1. Thanks Janis, that's good to know that you have also been happy with SpeakOut. For the little that we will be using it, it should hopefully last us for the summer.

  2. How much data comes with the $100? And how much is additional data?

    1. Nothing comes "with" the $100. The $100 (or $125 with the $25 bonus) is simply a credit on your account. You then use that credit to purchase one of the available calling packages that last 365 days, and add on an available data package if you wish that only last 30 days. The data packages are still quite expensive for what you get. The idea is to use them sparingly. So for us, that should work well since we will be using our wifi most of the time while at the park.

    1. It was a wonderful Easter with family.

I guess Chester doesn't realize quite how big he is! He is such a good puppy and so quiet.

Yep, it was just cheaper in the long run to fly out to Saskatchewan, plus it means that we have an excuse to return back to Ottawa in October. ;-) We are looking forward though to spending next winter in him.

    1. Good to know! I don't think we will be needing it much either so it should work out well for us. Guess we will know soon enough.
