We cant get enough of this town. I think we could live there!

The reason we hung around another day at Doña Mencía was because we had seen a marked trail that went up into the park behind the village of Zuheros.

So Ruth packed us a lunch, and we drove Louis over to the trailhead at the base of the town.

Another beautiful blue sky day! C'mon along on our hike with us...

Ruth, and the view of Zuheros.

Ruth thinks this is some kind of lily or maybe an orchid? Not sure.
Really pretty though!

Kevin, trying to get a better view!

Scenery along the way.

We spotted a cave on the opposite side of the ravine. It looked like there was a path that went up there, so we did a detour!

Yep, we're going to try and get up to that cave!

The path was pretty steep in places...but we made it!

Inside the cave. Hard to get the lighting right...

Kevin, sitting on the ledge.

Here's a video we took for you inside the cave!

Hmm. Now we have to get back down.

Part of the trail went through a strange forest. The trees were all stunted and there was green moss and lichen growing on everything.

Some kind of ruins.

Several of these very flat lookouts along the way. We have no idea the purpose, but they were obviously man made. Of course the trail is probably centuries old.

A single lone sheep.

Scenery along the way.

Another view as we got back to Zuheros.

We can't get enough of this town. I think we could live there!

The history of the times when this castle was built is intriguing.

We did 13.1 kms (8.2 miles) in just over four hours. Great to finally get out for a decent hike!

Today, we're headed back to the coast just west of Malaga where we're hoping to meet up with friends Glen and Steve. Haven't seen them since summer of 2012!

  2. I believe your mystery flower is a wild iris.

Spain, sigh. Can't wait to return. ☺

    1. Silly me! I told Kevin it was a lily but I really meant an iris, I just didn't have the name right. I used to have the bigger ones growing in my garden when we had a house.

We are loving Spain, and we can certainly see why you can't wait to return.

  3. I was going to guess Iris for the flower as well since it looks similar to a Dutch Iris. Tamara beat me to it! Looks like a gorgeous hike and town.

    1. Yes, I should have known that but I made the mistake and told Kevin that they were lilies or orchids. I used to have the Bearded Irises when we had a house, I can't believe I got the two mixed up.

It was a beautiful hike with perfect weather.

    1. Yep, we didn't see another soul on the trail so glad we didn't do the hike on Sunday when it would have been more crowded.

  5. Wonder if that flat outcropped was a structure at one point? One does certainly get a different perspective on what is considered "old". We started to poo-poo anything under two or three hundred years.

    1. We don't think it was, it didn't look like there had ever been any building in it's place! We are pretty sure that this trail had been there for many, many years and was a way to go from one town to the next before highways came into the picture so maybe they were just places to rest for the night or something.

Canada doesn't even come close to knowing what "old" is!

  6. Hi Kevin and Ruth, I found what I need to be able to fill up my propane should I take my motor home to Europe. That way you will not have to ask. Here is the kit you have to buy. http://www.lpgshop.co.uk/acme-to-all-europe-refill-adapters-set/. Thanks, keep posting...

Yeah, I knew that, I had the right flower in my mind but the wrong name for it!

    1. We had so many pictures of towns that this post was we were more concentrated on the hike itself rather than the urban area. Glad you were able to find some street views on Google. Really loved the town though!

  10. Heading for the touristy area now. We stayed near La Cala in October, Calahonda just a couple of miles along the coast. There is a large market there (La Cala) on Wednesdays. Look forward to tomorrow's post.

    1. Yeah, we know that it is going to be much busier and way more touristy but the weather is definitely warmer here. Not sure how long we will last before we need to get back to the countryside. ;-)

  11. Ah, after pushing through from Germany to southern Spain for 6 weeks, we've been playing around on the Costa de Luz between Cape Trafalgar and Cadiz for the last 2 weeks. Hiking in the national park around us, riding our bikes, going to the beach and enjoying the gorgeous weather here. Leaving tomorrow to spend a few days in Cadiz and then on to Seville and Cordoba. If you get around here, please be sure to check out Vejer de la Frontera, a moorish white washed hill town. Very nice! I'm sure you've heard but Ronda near Malaga is also highly recommended. Hope we run into you guys, maybe in Portuga?l! We've already been living/traveling all over Europe in our German bought motorhome for most of the last couple of years but now living in "Romy" full time for the next 2 years. So much still to see!

    1. Sounds like you have been having wonderful time. We are hoping to spend a bit of time in that area ourselves. We really wish that we had more time to spend here in Europe because there is way too much to see. Not sure that even two years will be enough time!

Hoping that we will be able to cross paths in the next few weeks with any luck.

    2. We'll figure out a way to get together for sure. We're just too close to not make this happen and we can be flexible with our schedule after Feb 1st. Cheers!

    1. It wasn't really much of a cave but it still was pretty interesting and we are glad we made the detour up to it despite the steep climb back down.
