We're hitting the road...

Yesterday was market day, and then I had my final dentist appointment at 1:00pm. I wanted to have some lunch before my appointment, and of course brush my teeth before going, so that meant two trips into town. But we haven't had much exercise this week, so two trips walking into town was fine with us.

We left around 10:15am on the first trip. It's about two kms (1.3 miles) each way.

First stop was for fruits and veggies at the Saturday weekly market.

All of this, for 58 pesos ($4.50 CAD, or $3.50 USD)!

One pineapple, two grapefruits, two apples, half a large cauliflower, three onions, a bag of carrrots, two peppers, two small cucumbers, three large potatoes, and a few stalks of celery.

Then it was up to Chema's restaurant where he makes carnitas on Saturdays. We bought a quarter kilo with all the fixings for 40 pesos ($3.12 CAD) to take away. Enough for two lunches for the two of us.

Back to the motorhome where we had a quick lunch and dropped off our produce. Then, back to town for the dentist.

Arrived at the dentist office at about 12:55pm for my 1:00pm appointment. The waiting room was pretty much full, but the receptionist didn't even give us a chance to sit down and ushered us right into the back room where Dr. Lissette was waiting for me!

An hour and twenty minutes in the chair, and we were done. Two caps fitted to the upper molars, and a full cleaning. Plus the big filling she had done on one of the lower molar a week ago, plus the cleaning she did on Ruth's teeth before as well.

Total cost? 2,500 pesos ($195 CAD, or $150 USD).

With that kind of service and prices, you almost don't mind going to the dentist. And it makes it even less painful that the dentist is quite pretty. :-)

Anyhow, now that's done.

Then, it was a quick stop at the butcher for a chunk of pork loin, a piece of chirizo sausage, and a big double chicken breast.

Heinz and Ulli, and Barb and Sal stopped by for happy hour so they could say goodbye. We sure had a good couple of weeks with them and we look forward to the time we meet again. No idea when that will be, but we do hope to see Heinz and Ulli on Pelee Island in Ontario sometime in October. We'll see.

While we were having happy hour, there were some children playing nearby. Ruth had a couple of scorpion suckers stashed away from last year and we gave them to the kids. Sure was funny seeing the look on their faces when they realized it was a real scorpion inside the suckers.

"Look what I have!"

And so, we're hitting the road this morning. Next stop is Delia's Trailer Park in Etzatlan, about 190 kms (118 miles) from here. Going to be doing some regular driving for the next two weeks as we head north to California.

  1. Even though there's a big chunk of driving ahead, taking you house with you always seems to make it less onerous. Happy Motoring.

    1. You are totally right Bob, having your house on your back makes traveling long distances so much more comfortable. :-)

  2. Dental work is cheap to us but would that be expensive to the Mexicans?

    1. Obviously it depends on the person. There are a lot of wealthy Mexicans who would consider it cheap. But there are a lot of poor Mexicans who wouldn't consider dental work to be a priority. And a growing middle class who would think that it's affordable. I can say that dentists in Mexico aren't looked upon as crooks like they are in Canada and the U.S., and it's probably like that because insurance companies aren't involved. I would think that dentistry is still very much a cash business in Mexico...extremely few Mexicans would have dental insurance.

  3. Love that you've discovered ways to beat the exorbitant dentist costs we pay in Canada. And excited to follow you on your next adventure. Have a safe trip. Cheers!

    1. If we had to have any major dental work done while being in Canada, then we would fly here to Mexico for a week or two and get the work done and it would still be cheaper than getting it done at home and you would have a holiday to boot. Dr. Lissette is an excellent dentist and a specialist in root canals, crowns and bridges, we would highly recommend her.

Looking forward to being on the road once again. :-)

  4. I wonder if you eat the scorpion when you are done with the sweet stuff? (eww!) I bet the kids loved that though!
Good on the dentist, have to keep that in mind when I don't have benefits through work anymore

    1. I think you are meant to eat the scorpion but not sure how many people would, not sure that I would but it sure is a fun topic for Happy Hour. :-) The kids thought it was great!

We love this dentist, she is good and through with your teeth and the price is fantastic, especially when you consider what the prices are like back home for the same work.

    1. I wonder! :-)

You brought smiles to our faces when you gave them to us and we sure put smiles on those children's faces when we gave the suckers to them. Not sure if they actually ate the suckers though but the looks on their faces were priceless.

  6. Great dental prices, that would not even cover our cleanings:( My last root canal and crown was $2500 and was with a discount??

    1. Ouch, that would sure hurt the pocketbook! You should consider coming to Valle de Juarez next time you need dental work like that done and you would get a holiday out of it for about the same price or maybe even less. :-)

    1. Thanks George, we will let you know for sure if we come through there with the motorhome. Not sure if we will be flying or driving and if we drive not sure if it will be with the motorhome or the car.

  8. Too bad you're not heading this way. You could have the house and the pool to yourselves. Well, maybe next year!
