Shutting things down

This is the last day for campers here at Cabri Regional Park. We don't have any daily campers here, and the seasonals have to be vacated by tonight, otherwise they pay $25 a night to stay longer. We'll have one or two of them stay, but they won't be a problem.

I've already got one of the five bathrooms shut down and winterized. And the one that needs renovating won't need much in the way of shutting it down because the entire interior will be ripped out anyhow next spring. And then I can do one more on Monday or Tuesday. The other two can wait until we shut the water supply off which won't be until later in the month.

I've moved the picnic tables off to the side in the daily camping area and one day this week I'll give the grass in that area one last trimming. There will be some leaves to pick up as well. The more leaves we get cleaned up this fall means the less leaves we will have to pick up in the spring!

I put the removable entrance doors back on the rear of the camp kitchen building. But what a job it was. I couldn't figure out how to put them back on because the hinges wouldn't line up properly. It turned out that when the summer students painted the outside of the building they had painted the wrong side of the doors, and so here I was trying to install them inside out! I got one of the other guys to give me a hand and we eventually figured it out. I guess painting them properly will be on the job list for next spring!

And, I caulked and sealed the eaves trough that I had installed a couple of weeks ago. I didn't think the seams would have leaked that badly, but they do. Or they did. All fixed up now.

The daily camping area is empty.

Ruth has been doing some landscaping work and trimming some bushes. It's never really been done properly here and it's a fair bit of work. But it looks so much better getting all of the crap and old leaves out from the bottom of the bushes. And if it's done regularly, it's not so much. But over the years it's just been made worse and worse because it's never been done, or at least not in recent memory from talking to some of the people here.

Nice evening yesterday.

There was a clear sky last night and we took the gator and drove to the top of the hill at around 10:30pm last night to see if there were any northern lights, but there wasn't a thing. Maybe we would have had to get up at 2:30am to check, but we didn't have the ambition for that!

We're excited for our son Alex. Apparently he has the travel bug! I guess he takes after his Mum and Dad! He left Ottawa this morning, flying to New York City where he'll take in the Mets game this afternoon with a university buddy of his, and then tomorrow morning he's off to Rome, Italy. This is that flight deal that I found for him a couple of months ago...$172 one way from New York to Rome. What a deal! Then he'll explore by ground, making his way to Switzerland where he'll meet up with a girl who we met at a remote hostel in South Africa last year. She offered to show him around, so that's pretty neat. Then he's off to Paris and then Amsterdam where he flies back to Canada. A three week trip, I'm sure he'll have a blast!

Our Amazon deal of the day is a good one. We actually profiled this deal a month or so ago, and several of our readers took advantage of it. So it's back again for those of you who missed the opportunity.

Today only, a great deal for those of you looking for a quality pair of binoculars.

  1. I like how you're planning ahead for next season, getting things done now that will make everything a bit easier next summer. Work smarter, not harder! :c)

    1. That is certainly what we are thinking! Still I think it will take a couple of years to get everything done the way that we want but it will make each year just a little be easier. At least that is what we are hoping!

  2. The solar geomagnetic storm arrived during the day Friday and left before sundown there. Europe and eastern North America got a good show, but we missed it. I think those picnic tables would look much better stacked in the kitchen :)

    1. I had read that this whole week there is suppose to be a good chance of spotting some Northern Lights so we will try to check each night before heading to bed. If one night looks like there could be a really good chance then we may even set the alarm and get up to have a look.

Kevin said yeah he thinks you are right about the picnic tables, and he will put them in the kitchen today, NOT!

    1. We agree and that is why we are trying to get as much done this fall as we can.

Alex is so excited and we are excited for him.

Alex is sure in for an exciting time. I love Rome. How nice of his friend to show him around Switzerland. What a treat.

    1. This whole week is suppose to be beautiful weather so hopefully we will get lots accomplished.

Actually that friend, is someone that we met in South Africa this past winter. We spent several days with her and even went on a hike together. When we heard that Alex was thinking about Switzerland we gave him her information because she said we would love to show him around. We excited to see how he makes out on his trip!

  5. Well, at least the insides of the doors are painted, now you just have to paint the other sides. *snort*!

    1. It wasn't the boys' fault though, it was whoever put the doors on last as they didn't have them on right to begin with so the two boys painted the side that was on the outside. It other side will get done next spring.

  7. How do you get rid of hitch itch when you don't have a hitch to itch?

    1. Hitchless Hitch Itch (HHI) is serious and can be debilitating. Only known treatment is high doses of interaction with RV-related blogs and forums. Hitchless attendance at Escapades or similar events may temporarily acerbate the condition---but knowledge derived supports better long-term prognosis after hitch is acquired.

    2. Ahhh, but we do have a hitch Nan, it's just down in Mexico at the moment and we are looking forward to getting back to it! Having said that, we are happy just to be traveling. We have enjoyed our time staying put for the last 5 months but now we want to get on the move once again.

      Love your definition Dugg!

  8. Good grief, painted the wrong side of the doors. Amazing.....sigh! Sounds like you have really gotten things in shape there so that next year will be much easier than this year.

    1. As I mentioned in the reply to Bob, it wasn't the fault of the two boys. They painted the side that was what they thought was the outside according to how the doors were installed. When Kevin went to reinstalled them is when he noticed that whoever installed them last didn't install them properly and that's why they wouldn't close the way they should and instead just got nailed shut. They are now install correctly!

  9. Doesn't it feel great to get these jobs done. So worth it.
We would love to see the Northern Lights one day. Have you before?
Although they have been seen in Scotland/Northern England we are thinking a trip to Iceland would be best. One day....
Your son will love his time in Europe. Rome is a great city and easy to get around on foot. So you can get a real feel of it. I first went when I was 17 and got lost....but that's another story. It didn't put me off!

    Have a great day!

    1. Yes, we have seen the Northern Lights before, mostly when we were younger. We did see them last spring at the other campground that we worked at but it was further north than this one. We are really hoping to see them before we leave here at the end of September. We are keeping our fingers crossed.

We think he will have a great time as well and we are looking forward to seeing his pictures!
