4 Mile Hike

It cleared up enough yesterday for us to go for a nice hike. We decided on one that starts at Ham Hill and hopped in the car after lunch for the short drive to the parking area.

As soon as we parked the car, we had our first nice view...

Not much sun. But no rain. Yet.

Ruth almost slid into the mud!

Even though it hadn't rained (yet!), the almost daily rainfall has meant that it would be almost impossible not to encounter mud along the way. It was kind of funny trying to work our way around it sometimes without slip sliding away! As you can see in the photo above, Chester the dog didn't care though!

The path took us through a nice meadow dotted with hundreds of sheep.

View of the village of Montacute.

This steep hill was not really muddy, but it sure was slippery. The guide book called it an "arduous ascent"!

St. Michael's tower is at the top of the hill.

Beautiful views from the top of the (free) tower.

Help! Lemme out!

Montacute House, built around 1598. It was closed to visitors yesterday.

Tony, taking a picture me, taking a picture of him! Too funny.

Ruth, sitting with Rico and Chester. (Rico is Helen's Mum's dog. We were dog sitting for the day.)

Then it started raining. Fortunately, we were just about done the hike and so didn't get wet. Then it was back to Helen and Tony's where a roast leg of lamb had been cooking. Boy it sure smelled good when we walked in the door! Who says you can only have roast dinner on a Sunday?!

  1. I like the use of the word "arduous". Very apt.
Probably not a good idea for Ruth to bend those bars in the tower like that.

  2. Another nice hike, at least it did not rain on you.

  3. That's the England that I have pictured in my mind, green sloping hills and sheep everywhere. Mmm, roast lamb, I'll bet is smelled good alright especially after a long cool walk!
