Vegas planning

After we got our cheap flights booked a couple of weeks ago, I started looking for a cheap car rental deal. I found a great deal for a week at $160, tax included, so I reserved it. Since then, I checked back every day and sure enough, the price changes!

Yesterday, I noticed the price had gone down to $142, so I re-booked it in Ruth's name using her email address. Then, I cancelled the one that was $160. A great deal became even better!

Then, I checked again later yesterday afternoon. The same week long rental was now down to $128, tax included! So I booked it again using my email address, and cancelled the one in Ruth's name. This morning, the price is back up to $151, so I'm feeling pretty good about the car rental deal we have booked.

We had another great day at Hacienda Contreras. Beautiful blue sky most of the day, with a bit of a breeze. Did our walk around the park a few times, and stopped by Whiskey's tree to see how it's doing...

Whiskey's tree is doing fine. No blooms on it, but maybe next month.

Friends Paula and Jerry showed up yesterday. We first met Paula and Jerry here in March of 2009, and coincidentally they live only a half hour or so from our daughter in Nova Scotia. So we visited them last June when we were in Nova Scotia.

Jerry and Paula

Later in the afternoon, we heard music coming from the lot next door. Turned out that they were having a fish fry and invited us to try some. So everyone got together and had a bit of fish.

  1. A few years ago we were going to Seattle for a week and needed to rent a car. I checked frequently and one day found the price to be $1 for the week. I immediately booked it. I was sure when we arrived they'd give me a hassle and say it was a mistake. The guy at the counter never said anything and we got that car for $1 for the week. Of course, all of the various taxes and a tank of gas ended up being $100 by the time we were done. Still, the best deal ever! Your deal is a good one too.

    1. Yep, once you've got a confirmation number, that's the deal! $1 huh...maybe mine will get better yet!

  3. Car rentals can have lots of hidden fees like airport taxes, local taxes etc. etc. Be sure to check out all the fina print.

How nice of your new friends to invite you to a fish fry. Life is good!

    1. It's actually $93 plus taxes and fees, so the $128 is the total price.

    2. Husband and I are on our way to Jackson Hole, WY in July and taking our children and granddaughter for a total of five people. We are paying through the nose for two weeks for a suburban suv to handle five people plus luggage. Heck, in that place, $128 would be the cost of two days suv rental. I keep checking back, too but no great deals. Kevin, what company was your best deal?

    3. Hi Dee. Our car rental is booked with Fox Rent a Car. So instead of a Suburban SUV, why not rent two compact cars?

    4. Kevin, that's a great idea. I didn't think of that. Even if it adds up to about the same $$, each family will have the independence to do their own thing with their own car. For instance, husband and I do not go white water rafting, but the kids do. Thanks.

  4. No fees to cancel? Good deal! Clearly checking again and again paid off. I'll be interested to know what the total to have the car for a week actually ends up being. Have never been to Vegas and never desired to go BUT I never thought I'd want to go to Mexico so I'm counting on your to convince me on Vegas too. :-)

    1. The cost will be $128 Sherry. Unless you buy extras like insurance, that is the cost. And for us, insurance is provided by our credit card company, so we don't need any extras. Only other cost will be gas.

    2. And no, there are never any fees to cancel a car rental booking done online.

  5. That car rental price is amazing. I would have never thought to keep checking back and rebook under Paul's email. Great job!

  6. I'm going to have to try that for a car rental in Hawaii. Keep checking that is. Thanks for the suggestion. Jim actually caught a couple of fish so he and I are going to have a fish fry. Not enough for anybody else though.

  7. What? Jim caught a couple fish? Surely that's blog worthy. I don't think you said a word, but I might have missed something.
Nice to see Whiskey's tree is hanging in there. If it's survived this long, it should be fine. Not sure when the best time to plant a tree is in Mexico.

  8. Love seeing all the RV's there.

Few of my plants are showing much new above the ground. I think all the activity of newly planted shrubs, etc takes place underground. NExt year that bush will be in full bloom.

  9. I always used Priceline's name your price for rentals and usually beat the online deals - but 128 is pretty good...

  10. Good deal on the car. If you want to do some hiking while you are there and get away from all the lights, Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire State park are both great areas to visit. We spend a lot of time in that area last winter.

  11. Just think now that you saved all that money, you'll have that much more to play the tables with.

How'd we survive before the Internet? Probably missed lots of great deals. :c(

  15. I have a suggestion for a great (Bargain) place to eat, easy walking distance. It’s directly behind the Paris Hotel.

They have steak dinners for $6, full breakfast for $4.
Ellis Island Casino & brewery. It’s a microbrewery.

    1. Thanks John! I don't see the steak on their menu for that price, although the rest of their prices are certainly reasonable. And $2 craft beer isn't bad either.
