Playa Zicatela

The plan for today fell into place nicely. We had a quick breakfast of cheese and mushroom empenadas, then Mary and Nataly came for a drive in Sherman. First stop was a nearby “trailer park” to use their dump station.

This is actually where we have been parked the last 5 days and I took this just before we left this morning.

There are two main “RV parks” here in Puerto Escondido and they have both been totally empty since we arrived. Today, there were two RV’s in the one park…a class C from Texas, and a VW bus with Mexico plates. We spoke to the owner of the place and usually this park has between eight and twelve transient rv’s parked at any given time during the winter. But the propoganda has done it’s job and the media blacklisting of Mexico has taken it’s toll. Do you think that Mexico is too dangerous to RV in? I’ll bet some of you do!

Have we seen any danger? Nope. Have we spoken to anybody who has seen any danger? Nope.

Anyhow, we paid his asking price of 50 pesos ($4.20) to empty our tanks and then we drove down the beach road to Playa Zicatela. We had parked at Uncle Eugenio’s for a few days almost two years ago, and he welcomed us again this time. It’s a little busier between Christmas and New Years as many Mexicans are on holiday just now. But, he juggled some cars around we are now nicely set up.

We never asked, but I’m pretty sure Eugenio is letting us park for free, so we don’t mind purchasing some of his beach services. So we splurged 100 pesos ($8.40) on a couple of padded loungers and an umbrella. It was beautiful just sitting and watching the waves roll in and everbody playing in the water. Lots of dogs playing the water too, and some of them sure know how to jump throught the waves.

I’m still not feeling well, so I went back to Sherman after lunch to have a nap. As time went on, my right ear became very painful and now I’m pretty sure I have an ear infection. I don’t get sick very often, so this is driving me nuts. And I don’t like taking pills for anything, but I had to pop a Tylenol 3 this afternoon. I ended up riding my bike looking for a doctors office, but all three that I stopped at were closed. One said to come back at 6:00pm, but by then the Tylenol 3 was doing it’s job and I decided to hold off and see what tomorrow brings. One of the regulars here said to just to to a Farmacia and explain the problem and it will be a lot cheaper, even though the doctor consultation would only cost about 300 pesos ($25.00). Pretty sure I’m going to need some penicillin, but I guess we’ll see.

We had a beatiful blue sky while at the beach, and Alex got a bit of a sunburn again today. He’s going to have to be more careful! But as of about 5pm when we went out to take some photos it had clouded over, and Sherman even felt a couple of raindrops on his roof! It never rains here between November and March. So we have been told.

  2. Sounds like a good time down there. We never really considered RVing in Mexico, but I keep reading about people who are having a lovely time doing it and it's looking more and more enticing.

  3. Hope you get that ear taken care of right away that can sure put a damper on vacation fun,Glad to see you are not having any problems, but I think that is because you are not in the border towns where the cartels seem to be concentrating there violence.I am still a little nervous for your safety but I know you use common sense. After 30 years in law enforcement I can tell you two things,if something just doesn't look or feel right, it usually isn't, and when there's trouble, for some reason there is a calm before the storm, if it gets real quiet, that is the time to look for cover. I know you guys feel safe and I am glad for that. I would probably visit the areas you are in but a lot of Americans have written off Mexico until a dramatic improvement is made. Personally Donna & I enjoyed our last trip to Mexico.Be safe out there.. Sam & Donna..

  4. Tell us about water that you put in Sherman? Is this also water that you drink?

We have been following your trip since Memphis. We live in Oklahoma.

  6. Ron...Happy New Year to you as well. We had a nice Christmas season, just wish Kevin had been feeling better so that he could have enjoyed more.

All the best in the New Year.

ourtakeonfreedom...We love it here in Mexico and we think the media blows things out of proportion. People love to hear the bad things and unfortunately you don't hear about all the great things.

Sam and Donna...That's the thing with Mexico, who wants to vacation in the border towns. You cross the border and then drive and get away from that area. We have not seen any problems or heard of any since entering Mexico. You are right though, common sense is the best thing whether in Mexico or any city in Canada or the U.S.

Anonymous...We put tap water in the tanks and use it for showering, dishes and cleaning. We use purified bottle water for drinking and cooking, which is what all Mexicans use for drinking.

WBY...I keep saying that Kevin is feeling better but then he makes a liar out of me. I will try saying it again because he really is starting to feel better. Alex has been trying to stay out of the sun but he also doesn't want to go back to school without some colour.

Hope everyone has a great New Year's and has a year ahead that is full of adventure.

    Kevin, Ruth and Whiskey
