Crown Winery, Humboldt, Tennessee

When we headed out of Dover yesterday, we turned into the Donelson National Battlefield to do their short scenic drive down to the river. This is a civil war site, and if you're a history buff it would be an interesting place for you to stop.

Sherman, having a look down the river.

This fellow was watching our every move. I think he was eyeing Whiskey for supper!

So then we drove on to Humboldt, Tennessee. The #79 highway is a nice four lane highway with hardly any traffic. We stopped in a couple of the towns along the way to look for a laundromat, but didn't find one until we got to Humboldt. Also bought $75 worth of gas at $2.599/gal (about $0.70 a litre!). Gas gets cheaper the further south we go.

Arrived at the Crown Winery around 4:00pm.

We were told to ask for Lisa, who was the first person we approached in the store and tasting area. She was expecting us, and we soon got into a discussion about Harvest Hosts and the program. We were then introduced to Rita Howard, the CEO of the winery, who ushered us over to the tasting area where Lisa showed us the different wines that are produced here. As we were tasting the different wines, Rita's husband Peter came over and introduced himself. He's the one in charge of the winemaking.

Everyone was so welcoming. Even Whiskey was allowed to come in and say hi to the three other dogs that are part of the fixtures around the winery.

Rita and Peter have a pretty colorful past. Rita was the 1961 Miss Tennessee, and Peter, who is originally from England, is around 154th in line to the British throne. They're both down to earth and interesting people to talk to.

We bought a nice bottle of Muscadine dessert wine for $13.

We had enough time just before it was getting dark to take Whiskey for a walk around the vineyards. It's a beautiful location and well worth the visit.

Sherman parked up at the vineyards.

Ruth, inspecting the grapes!

I was planning on taking a few more pictures of the winery for you, but it's pouring rain! Here's one of the main building that I managed to get...

Oh, you'll now notice a link to Harvest Hosts on the right side of our blog. If you visit the link through this site and decide to sign up (only $20 for a full year) we get a small commision!

John and Ellen...Yes, I think Harvest Host will work out well for us. They have grown so much already since they started a year ago. Safe travels to you as well.

Pidge and Ali...Harvest Hosts is a great way to travel and stay inexpensively, don't sign up for it until you know you will use it. They are constanly growing and also hoping to branch out to Canada as well.

  9. Thanks for the info about the winery. We belong to Harvest Hosts and I think it is a great concept for the winery owners and RV'ers.

  10. We think so too. It will be nice when they start them in Canada. Once when we were travelling through BC we asked a one winery and they said no. They blamed it on insurance concerns, too bad it would have been a beautiful place to park for the night.
