Rocky Springs Campground (day 2)

Thursday April 9…9:30pm

It was totally quiet for us last night. At one point I woke up and specifically noticed that I couldn’t hear a single thing!

I did some cleaning of the windows while Ruth was getting a picnic lunch ready for us. I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing some rain over the next several days, so I treated the front windshield with Rain-X. I was checking back, and noticed that we have not had any real rain since January 15th. I think we had a little drizzle around February 1st, but hardly enough to count as rain.

We headed off on a hike towards Owens Creek waterfall. First we had to walk about a half mile to a parking area where a sign said that the waterfall was 2.5 miles (4 kms) away. We followed that trail, which winds in and out and up and down. It felt like a lot more than 2.5 miles, but eventually we made it. We figure that they meant it was 2.5 miles as the crow flies. If you include the twists and turns it was probably closer to 3.5 miles! When we got there, we found out that we could walk along the roadway back to the campground, and that distance would turn out to be 2.5 miles. The waterfalls were less than spectacular, but kind of pretty anyhow even though the water flow was quite low. We had lunch at a picnic table there, and then headed back to the campground.

Not much water flowing over the waterfall at Owens Creek

The Natchez Trace Parkway...Sherman loves driving on this nice smooth road with hardly any traffic on it!

We were pretty tired when we got back, especially Whiskey! We figure we ended up doing 6.5 miles (10.5 kms) in about 2.5 hours. Poor Whiskey will be 13 years old this month, but we stopped and rested with her quite a bit and she did fine.

Watched a movie this evening, “Home for the Holidays” with Holly Hunter from 1995. It was stupid, and I wouldn’t have even sat through it all, but Ruth wanted to finish it once we started it.

Tomorrow we will head for Jackson, Mississippi and see if there’s anything worth seeing there. If not, we’ll carry on to the next free campground, and still plan on being in Nashville, Tennessee by Monday the 13th.

Today was a comfortable day, temperature about 24C (74F) and sunny with coudy periods.
