Near Puerto Escondido (day 4)

Thursday February 26…10:00pm

We took Whiskey for a walk in the river this morning. The river is pretty wide, but you can cross the whole thing on foot at this time of year.

It’s maybe up a little higher than your knees at certain points, but for the most part even Whiskey doesn’t get completely wet. We’re told that during rainy season, June and July, the river is quite fast moving, and even dangerous. But at this time of year people come throughout the day to enjoy the water, sometimes just lying in the water with their clothes on for an hour or so. And lots of people bring their children to play in the shallow refreshing water.

Our spot by the river

Very wide river, but very shallow at this time of year

Whiskey likes the river!

As Ruth was making sandwiches for lunch, Marie arrived with a plate of freshly cooked shrimp in homemade salsa sauce topped with avocado. They were delicious! When we were finished, there was quite a bit of very spicy sauce leftover, so we kept it as a base for the spaghetti sauce Ruth will make for Saturday night.

Yummy shrimp that Marie brought over for us.

Around 4:00pm, Marie and Alfredo took us for a drive to the other side of the river where a woman has a sort of reptile zoo. She had about a dozen crocodiles and probably a hundred or more iguanas all in her backyard. Then we continued further on to the beach where the river meets the ocean. There was a little food shack set up there, and we sat and had a drink. The bill for 2 beers, 1 bottle of water, and 1 fresh coconut was 44 pesos ($3.90 CAN, $3.12 US).

When we got back to Sylvia’s house (Alfredo’s mother) Marie made dinner and invited us to stay. We had tostados (toasted tortillas) with either bean sauce and ground sausage or shredded chicken and cheese. It was really good, and we walked away full. They sure do look after us when it comes to food!

Still no firm word on when this wedding is supposed to happen. Marie and Alfredo went for their doctors certificate (required for marriage in Mexico) and got that done today, but now we won’t know until tomorrow about the marriage certificate itself. We’ll play it by ear, but at this point we’ll likely stay until Monday anyhow. Alfredo’s father is a federal police officer and he has been working out of town for a few months. He returns every couple of weeks for a visit and is supposed to be home on Sunday so we’d like to meet him.
