Hope, B.C.

Sunday November 25...11:30pm

It did get cold last night! Didn't go to -13, but when I got up at 3am to turn the furnace on, it was -10.4! That is too cold to be in a motorhome! But now that we are in Hope, we are pretty much done with sleeping overnight in the mountains.

Got up around 7am and started driving right away to warm things up. There was no traffic on the road, so we really took our time coming down the steep grades coming down from the mountains into Hope. Stopped for a walk at the Hope Slide...where a chunk of the mountain broke away during a small earthquake back in 1965 and killed 4 people who were driving in their cars on the highway below. Came into Hope and stopped at the visitor's centre but as we've found all across Canada, it was closed on a Sunday. Went for a long walk around town. They have a beautiful park right downtown and they have lots of different carvings that are done with a chainsaw. Didn't have the camera with us, but will be sure and take some pictures tomorrow when we go walking.

After lunch, we looked up our globalfreeloader hosts. Cory and Elaine are about our age and have lived in Hope pretty much their whole lives. Cory is an inspector at a weigh scale (which is kind of funny given that I have been wanting to get Sherman weighed!) and Elaine has been working at the Hope post office since she was 18! They are a blast...we had a great afternoon and evening sharing travel stories. They are also looking forward to doing some extended travelling in early 2009 when they have booked a year off from their jobs and are going to go backpacking in South America and Asia. Their friend Anne came over for a little while as well...she and her husband Chris are also RV'ers and Chris has been trying to talk Anne into living in their motorhome. So we were explaining how we went about it. We are looking forward to meeting Chris when he comes over with Anne tomorrow evening.

Hope is a really nice town of about 6,000 people. It's famous for being the location where the first "Rambo" movie was filmed back in 1982. Quite a few of the townspeople were hired as extras in the film, and in fact our host Cory was in several shots. We're going to have to rent or buy the DVD now as it's been quite a few years since we've seen that movie.
