Ran out of gas!

We're taking off in our campervan Igor for three weeks. We're heading to El Chico National Park in the state of Hidalgo to do some hiking.

It's going to be cooler up there... calling for highs of 19C (66F) during the day and only 4C (39F) at night. Perfect hiking weather though!

The propane tank at our house was pretty much empty, and the one in Igor was getting low as well. So our host Chago called the propane delivery truck and they showed up at 8:45am Sunday morning!

Filling up the house and the motorhome.

The tank for the house is quite large. It took 180 liters (47 gallons) to fill up, so the bill was 1,924 pesos ($146 CAD, $105 USD). That sounds like a lot, but it will probably last six months or more.

Igor's tank is much smaller, so it only took 26 liters (7 gallons) to fill. Total of 280 pesos ($21 CAD, $15 USD).

We said goodbye to Saskia.

She is headed to a house sit in Oaxaca and then back to Netherlands in February. Really nice lady, and we'll stay in touch through facebook and hopefully be able to visit her in Europe at some point.

Sunday was market day and so we hopped on the ATV and went into Valle to do our fruits and veggies shopping. I knew the gas was low, but there is no actual gauge. I looked inside the tank and could see fuel sloshing around so I figured we would have enough. I was wrong! Sure enough, on the way back it started sputtering. I had to walk almost 2 kms each way to the gas station and back. Oh well. That was our first fill up, so now I know.

Spent the afternoon moving more stuff into Igor and giving the exterior a bath. Only have the exterior windows left to do this morning before we leave.

The younger couple with the ten year old son that we had met Saturday evening invited us for a late lunch at 3:00pm. He is originally from Oaxaca and one of their specialty dishes is called Tlayudas. We have had them before in Oaxaca and they are delicious. In this area you can't normally buy the large tortillas that they use to make them, but his mother brings them for him when she visits.

First they spread pork lard on the large crispy tortilla shell.

Then they spread around chorizu sausage, cheese, avocado, lettuce, and beans.

Spreading the beans and chorizo.

Then fold it over and fry both sides. Then add salsa to taste.

Delicious!

In the evening, we had the young couple from the states who arrived with their campervan Saturday evening come up and we shared some of the things they should see and do in Mexico on their way to the Guatemala border. They are taking 18 months to drive to Ushuaia, Argentina. Nice to be able to share our experience here with some new explorers.

So we're off! First stop is a campsite outside the town of Jilotepec about two and a half hours away.

    1. Lol, yep but if you want the pronunciation right, you need to leave out that second "w"! 😊

  2. My dad had this thing with gas. When the needle hit "E" he knew he could make it a few more miles so when my mother, who kept an eagle eye on the gauge, mentioned they should get gas, he would say, "We can make it to the next town" or something to that effect. I can't remember him ever actually running out but I can remember mom getting angry! I only ran out once, in the middle of the night on a weekend run from Vancouver to visit my brother in Edmonton back in the 60's. We were stranded at the side of the road at 2 AM with no lights in sight and in pre GPS times. A pickup stopped and a farmer gave us 5 gallons of marked farm gas and wouldn't take any money. "It's illegal to put this in a car so I would get in trouble", he said. I now try to make a habit of filling up when it hits 1/4 tank. As you know, I hate walking! LOL

    1. Kevin is very much like your dad then, he always says we can make it to the next town. Twice we came close to running out of gas and both times were in Sherman. Once in Texas where we literally made it into the gas station on fumes and the other time was driving into the campground at Hacienda Contreras. I don't think we have ever run out of gas while actually on the road until now. If Kevin had realized that the tank was that low we would have got gas but the ATV doesn't have a fuel guage so it is really hard to know exactly how low the fuel is. At least now we have an idea so hopefully it won't happen again.

  3. Wishing you Safe Enjoyable Travels. My 86 had faulty Ground wires on both gas tanks. Made for a real guessing game.

    It's about time.

    1. Thank you! The drive itself went well and we found a nice campground but we did have an issue that will need to be resolved.

Yes, that would make it a real guessing game. In a truck that could pose a big problem unless you keep a close eye on your mileage.

    1. We don't think it is unhealthy at all except for the bit of pork lard that is very lightly spread on the large tortilla. It is far healthier than what a pizza would be!
