Exciting news! Your chance to Travel with Kevin and Ruth!

Any of you who had read our daily reports about the Mexico RV Caravan trip we did in January through March of 2018 know that we weren't totally happy with a few things on that trip. Mainly, that it was too rushed, and it didn't include enough relax time. And there was quite a bit we didn't like about the route itself.

We have not been able to come to an agreement with the people who organized that caravan to do another trip through them this upcoming winter.

So we are going to run our own Mexico RV Caravan, with our own route and time schedule!

This is your chance to experience Mexico the way we normally see it in an RV.

We're going to depart from Mission, Texas on Sunday December 2, 2018, and arriving Laredo, Texas on Saturday March 30, 2019 (117 nights, almost 4 months).

This trip will be with maximum 7 rigs, plus ours. We've learned that a smaller RV group is better in a lot of ways. Easier to get fuel, easier to get everyone parked up at some of the RV parks, easier for touring...yet, being in a group environment also offers benefits compared to doing things alone. Lots of comeraderie when you want it, better pricing, and of course some people feel more comfortable being with others from a safety perspective.

The beautiful Playa Zicatela at Puerto Escondido.

Rig size is being limited. Essentially, smaller is better in Mexico! And as a group, we are all limited by the largest rig in the group. We drive a 28 ft Class A motorhome and we like to go to places that many larger rigs don't fit. Sometimes, we think our motorhome is too big! But we've been RV'ing all over Mexico for over ten years, so we know that it's really the perfect size for us. There are actually quite a few places on our route where anything over a 32 ft motorhome would be difficult... so that's where we're drawing the line, although a smaller sized fifth wheel or travel trailer would also be acceptable provided there are only one or two of them in the group.

We're still working on the route, but it will be approximately 5,500 kms (3,400 miles) over the four month period. Lots of time to relax and explore. (For comparison, we did 9,000 kms over three months last winter!)

What will we be exploring? Here are some highlights...

  • Real de Catorce... the silver mining town that you can only access through a 2.3 km (1.5 mile) long tunnel.
  • Beautiful Guanajuato, and its network of narrow streets, alleyways and tunnels.
  • Valle de Bravo, "the Switzerland of Mexico".
  • The monarch butterfly sanctuary at Piedra Herrada
  • Fantastic Mexico City.
  • The beautiful beaches of Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, Acapulco, and Zihuatanejo.
  • The Paracutin church buried in lava.

Among many other exciting venues!

Beautiful Valle de Bravo, Mexico.

Pricing has not yet been confirmed, however this trip will be much cheaper than any other Mexico RV caravan advertised.

If your rig meets the specifications mentioned above, and you are easy going people who can roll with the punches and are looking for some adventure, then send us an email at [email protected] and we can send you more details as they become available. On the other hand, if you are the type who needs to be plugged in to services all the time with your air conditioner running... this trip is not for you!

There are already two rigs signed up, so there are only five vacant spots available for this once in a lifetime experience.

  1. Not that I can go but you may want to mention if animals are permitted (last year I know you had some issues with dog owners not wanting to leave their dogs behind when on tours). Good for you guys! I am looking forward to our 8 nights in Ixtapa/zihuatanejo (4 each in January). If this works you could do it annually!

    1. Yep, animals are welcome on this trip... but we are of course stressing that your dog is your responsibility, and that you may miss out on some things because of that. We traveled Mexico for four and a half years with our own dog, so we understand what's involved.

    1. Then your feeling was correct! We think it is going to be much more fun than the last one which we did enjoy except the pace was just too fast for us and some of the route not quite to our liking.

    1. A truck camper would be a great unit to have for traveling in Mexico especially to some of the places that we have in mind. Sorry you wouldn't be able to do it this winter though. :-(

  15. Was so excited to find your blog about camping in Mexico, but then saw you have a length restriction. We have a 36 ft Bounder and had hoped to find a Caravan to go down to Mexico with. I will watch your sight for next year to see if you change the length. I can’t get my husband to buy a smaller Motorhome yet.

    1. Happy that you found our blog but sorry that your unit is too big. Unfortunately even if we decide to do this trip again we will still have the length restriction in place. We have been to all these places before and with a group it just wouldn't be easy or sometimes feasible to do the route with anything bigger. Perhaps if you were traveling on your own or with one other rig it could be done but we have found with our travels around Mexico that smaller is better. You could look into Caravanas de Mexico though, they do a Copper Canyon Tour that you could join, in a rig your size.
