On our way to Dawson City

Tuesday morning, we were going to do the hike up Mt. Haldane. But we were still a little tired from our hike on Monday, so we decided to take a pass. There will be more hiking coming up shortly, and we knew we should give our legs a days rest before attempting another big hike.

So we set off driving from Keno City towards Dawson City.

We got lucky that they were in the process of grading the worst part of the road...

Grading the road.

Also, the 50km (30 mile) gravel road leading from Mayo to Keno City is overall in really good condition. No problem doing 80 km/h (50 mph) right up until the last 10 kms or so before Keno City.

Scenery along the way.

Mount Haldane. It will have to wait for another time!

When you drive in the Yukon, you need to watch for these flags warning of a bump in the road!

Pretty flowers along the roadside.

We turned off towards the McQuesten Airport.

It's just a landing strip in the middle of nowhere, but right beside the Stewart River. Almost 2 kms (1.3 miles) to get to the runway, and then we saw a sign of a truck camper with a line through it. But we soon figured out that they just didn't want you parking right there at the end of the runway. There were several spots right along the river that had firepits built and you could tell that locals come here to camp.

While we had a good spot, we went for a walk afterwards and found several other good spots on a roadway past the other side of the runway. We wanted to continue walking, but we got close to a pond, and the mosquitoes found us! We have been doing okay with mosquitoes, and haven't even had to put on any spray yet, although we did need to run our electric plug in mosquito killer inside the motorhome last night for a half an hour. (We bought it n Mexico... not approved for sale in Canada or the U.S.) It worked great and not a single mosquito bothered us during the night.

Ruth had a hard time standing still for this photo because of the mosquitoes!

The view out our front windshield.

This morning, we head for Dawson City where we will spend three nights. We have some special things planned for you over the next couple of days!

Yesterday's drive, 166 kms (103 miles)

  3. That sunset picture by the water looks similar to the sunset picture of Long Lake here in Alberta. Yay!

    1. I laugh when you say sunset picture because it really still wasn't sunset yet, there was still a few more hours before it when down but we were already at 10:30pm! :-)

  4. Looking at old photos in google maps, I see Canada and USA remote areas in Alaska and Yukon have nice facilities despite their remoteness. Alaska airlines has an airport in the most northern point...awesome. You are very lucky to be traveling and seeing the 'frontier' and/or territory with lots of wildlife and wilderness. It is a priceless experience and we get to come along too. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Yes, they have great facilities. Most towns have huge recreation centres with hockey rinks and curling rinks and a basketball/soccer most of them even have indoor pools. Lots of activities to keep everyone busy, especially in the winter when the days are long, cold and dark.

    1. It is made by Raid and works much the same way as the Thermacell does except this one works off of electricity instead of the little butane cartridges. You can only buy them in Mexico, not in Canada or the USA.

    3. You shouldn't have any problem finding them in any of the big grocery stores there.
