Planning our route north

We didn't expect to be here in Valle de Juarez this long, but because of my dental work it turns out that we're "stuck" here until March 13th.

While we're very happy to be spending more time here than expected, it also means that our drive up to Los Angeles area has to be done in a two week period. Which means we have to do more miles per day than we normally like to do.

So yesterday, I spent some time planning an approximate route so that we don't end up rushing towards the end.

3,000 kms (1,860 miles)

And during that two week period, there are people we want to see along the way. So while there are some short cuts that we could take to shave a few miles off, we may not be back to this area for a while.

Here's what it'll look like...

Valle de Juarez to Etzatlan 193 kms March 13
Etzatlan to Valle de Banderas 280 kms March 15
Valle de Banderas to Lo de Marcos 48 kms March 17
Lo de Marcos to Teacapan 334 kms March 19
Teacapan to Celestino 209 kms March 21
Celestino to Alamos 500 kms March 22
Alamos to Guaymas 268 kms March 24
Guaymas to Tucson 527 kms March 25
Tucson to Casa Grande 112 kms March 27
Casa Grande to Blythe 320 kms March 28
Blythe to Brea 320 kms March 29.

Yikes. There are a couple of 500 km (300 mile) days in there. We hardly ever do that! Oh well. You'll notice that there are a few rest days in there too. You do what you have to do. Besides, we are looking forward to seeing Bonnie in Etzatlan, Garry and Jean in Valle de Banderas, the entire caravan group in Lo de Marcos, Grace and Steve in Tucson, Renate in Casa Grande, and finally Tamara and Mike in Brea.

And then of course Helen and Tony arrive March 31, and we'll spend two weeks touring southern California with them.

Speaking of which, I booked us a two week car rental. I've had my eyes open for a deal, and finally one came along through Enterprise. $205 USD taxes included for the full two weeks with unlimited mileage. What a deal!

So, things are coming together.

  2. It seems like you will cross into the US at Nogales. Since you are going to Casa Grande , why not cross at Lukeville. Just curious

    1. It makes more sense to cross at Nogales. Especially since we will be going to Tucson. Even if we were going directly to Casa Grande, it is still a shorter distance through Nogales than Lukeville.

  3. Yes, I see a couple of very ambitious days in that itinerary, but Sherman can handle it! Five more sleeps!

    1. We know Sherman can handle it, just not sure if we can! We really don't enjoy doing those long driving days.

  4. I wish you could stop in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) it used to be a sleepy fishing village but you can still camp on the beach at Playa Bonita & get fresh shrimp right off the boats. Yum!

    1. Sorry but it isn't in the cards for this trip back, maybe we will check it out some other time.

    1. From every thing that we hear, it isn't all that scenic! I guess we will see soon enough.

  6. I hate long-day drives but sometimes they have to be done. When you have a rest day or low mile day, it makes it worthwhile. Good deals require lots of checking and you know that better than most. They can come and go from one hour to the next.

    1. Yes, this is true and I think that Kevin has tried to plan it so that we don't get burned out trying to get to our destination.

You know how Kevin always likes to get the best deal out there and to get value for our money and he almost always does. :-)

  7. Looks like a great trip, as they say the fun is in the journey not the destination:)

    1. We totally agree about the fun being in the journey and not just the destination. Unfortunately our month long trip got shortened to 2 weeks so now we can't have a real relaxing trip to Los Angeles as we would have liked to have had, still it is a longer trip up there than most people would take.
