Plans change, but we adapt and move on...

We had been looking forward to a visit from Ruth's cousin Helen and her husband Tony. They were scheduled to arrive here in mid January and stay with us in the motorhome for two and a half weeks. They live in England, and have never been to Mexico and we were really looking forward to showing them the real Mexico...the one outside of the tourist havens and all inclusive resorts.

But last week, Helen broke her leg.

Doctors say she won't be going anywhere in an airplane for three months. So our plans with them quickly went down the drain. Now, we're hoping to meet up with them somewhere in the U.S. on our way back to Canada in late March or early April. Which will still be fun, but not quite the same as what we had planned.

Oh well...can't change what has already happened, so just have to make the best of it.

So now, we've got some extra time on our hands.

This is Bruno, the owner's dog here at the marina. Big head, no brains. Still, he's a friendly fellow!

Our plans with the RV caravan still don't change. So we still need to be in Guanajuato for February 4th. But Guanajuato is not that far away. It's only about 360 kms (223 miles) and could be done in one day if we really wanted to. But, there are some places we want to see along the way and we could easily stretch that 360 kms into a two week drive!

And we're still going to stay right where we are for the time being. We're enjoying just doing nothing for a change. Yesterday, we told our friend Chago who owns the marina here that we might stay for two weeks or we might stay for a month. In all honesty, we're thinking we'll head out of here January 7th which is the day after Three Kings Day, and we think it's also when the children go back to school here. But again, we'll see how we feel.

The marina where we are parked up. You can see Sherman on the far right.

But that still leaves a bit of a gap. So we're looking at the map and trying to decide where else we could visit that's not too far out of the way. Gasoline is fairly pricey right now in Mexico...in fact it's more expensive than Canada for the first time that we can remember. So we dont want to go too far off course.

There are 32 states in Mexico. More accurately, 31 states and the Distrito Federal, which is Mexico City. We have been to 30 of them. So, two to go. Queretero, and Tlaxcala. We are going to be heading for Queretero City when we leave here, so that will cross another one off.

(Edit: Correction...looking back at where we have and haven't been, it is the states of Hidalgo and Tlaxcala that we have never visited. We were actually in Queretero on the way down here. Don't know what I was thinking!)

That leaves the state of  Tlaxcala, which is a very small state, located just east of Mexico City. We'll make it there one day!

Ruth and Sherman.

Another beautiful sunset.

I don't know, but for the price...this does seem like a really good deal!

And in Canada...the Jackery cell phone and tablet battery packs don't often come on sale. This is the exact same one that we use, and it works great. We don't hesitate to recommend it...

    1. We work at work at keeping ourselves as healthy as we can but you never know what lies ahead and this is the reason we are doing what we are doing now. Smelling the roses is the best part of travel, at least for us it is. ;-)

  4. I love your description of Bruno - big head, no brains :-) Do you ever get a chance to go out on the water on any of the boats there?

    1. Yes! Actually, we were going to take a kayak out this morning, but we're going into town to the Sunday market instead. Maybe tomorrow for the kayak. Also, our friend Chago is a very good marinero (sailor) and he took us out one day about five years ago when we first came here. He said he would take us out again this visit, and we're looking forward to that!

    1. Yes, she is very upset about it but has come terms with it and is thinking ahead so that she still has something to look forward too. We are hoping now that we can make arrangements to meet up a little later as we pass through the States on our way back to Canada in late March.

  6. What a disappointment... and literally a pain for Helen. One time it took us a month to drive from Albuquerque to Farmington NM... so I don't think it's at all unreasonable to take 2 weeks to drive 223 miles ;-)

    1. Yes, it is a big disappointment for all of us but especially Helen. Keeping our fingers cross that she heals well and that we can meet them in the States instead.

There is a lot to see along the way so I don't think we will have a problem using up those few weeks.

    1. Yes, I am sure she is very disappointed about this change but Mexico will still be here, we will just do it another year. Hoping she heals well and that we can still meet up with them in late March or early April, we will still have a blast and it will all be new to them.

  9. Helen and her husband Tony are very upset about the change of plans. We had been so looking forward to meeting up with Ruth and Kevin and exploring a small part of Mexico. Now we look at the beautiful pictures and try not to be envious. I guess we will explore it another time.

    1. Mexico will still be here and we will be back again so we will just make more plans then. Glad to hear the operation went well and that you are back home again. Lots of positive thoughts heading your way for a quick recovery and that we will see you both at the end of March or early April. It will all be new for you and we are just looking forward to having a fun time with you both no matter where it is. :-)

  10. Amazed that you have truly been to all four corners of the country! Tequisquiapan is in Querétaro too---it would be great to get a second (and third) opinion of the place...

    1. Yep, we pretty much have now, but there are still so many places that we haven't seen and want to see here in Mexico. Not sure if we are making it back to that area but if we do we will try to find somewhere to park nearby and go into town to do some exploring and give you a report.

  11. Tlaxcala is known as the hacienda state. Historic haciendas dot the state along with centuries old convents. I bet you could find some great historic haciendas where you could boondock as well.

    1. And here we thought that the Cuernavaca area was the hacienda area. I would love to visit some of the old haciendas and convents, maybe will we have to go the extra miles THIS winter!

    1. It is a great spot, we are having no problem relaxing (which believe it or not is a hard thing for us to do) here. Having said that we do want to go out and do some exploring.
