Heading north - Sedona to Flagstaff

Yesterday morning, we had Joe over to the motorhome for breakfast. Some of Ruth's delicious pancakes! And then it was time to say goodbye, as we were heading north on highway 89A towards Flagstaff.

Our original plan was to head up to the Grand Canyon for a few days, but when we detoured down to Mesa to avoid that storm last week, we essentially lost three days.

There's enough to see and do between here and Las Vegas so we felt we didn't need the added expense of making the 150 mile (240 km) return trip detour up to the Grand Canyon. So we're going to put that off for another time.

Kevin, Ruth, Joe, and Elena. With Joe and Linda's beautiful Itasca Sunstar motorhome.

Thanks for having us Joe...we enjoyed the visit!

Nice drive on highway 89A north from Sedona.

Pretty rock walls.

It's actually a fairly busy highway though.

Taken from the Oak Creek Vista viewpoint.

The road we had been on is down in that valley.

Coming into Flagstaff, you get a beautiful view of Humphreys Peak, the highest point in Arizona.

We stopped at the Visitors Center where they actually have a daytime parking section for RV's, and it's right close to the central area. Spotted a laundromat and decided to do a quick load while we had the opportunity. While the machine was running, we went into the Visitors Center and picked up a few local hiking maps.

Didn't really see anything we wanted to do in town, so we headed a few miles north of town. We had been given GPS coordinates (thanks Grace!) to what was supposed to be a fantastic, relatively unknown boondocking location in Coconino National Forest.

They had 17" (43 cm) of snow here a week ago Monday, so we didn't know what the road getting in was going to be like, or if the spots might already be occupied. So when we got to the turn off from the main highway, I walked in to check things out. Turns out that the road was wet, but not really that muddy so we thought that Sherman could handle the drive in without getting stuck.

And, it was worth it. Nobody else around. What a great spot. Sorry, can't share this one...it's a secret!

Yesterday's drive, 35 miles (56 kms).

Oh...check out the footprints we found outside of our motorhome...

About 4" long, we think it's a Mexican Gray Wolf.

  1. Better a wolf than a bear, wolves are generally shy :) He was just checking you out.

    1. Agreed, but we won't have minded seeing either one as long as we were inside of Sherman, instead all we saw were squirrels, birds and a rabbit.

  2. That is a nice drive up 89A and an awesome boon docking site as well, enjoy.
The Grand Canyon will always be there and does not change much.

    1. Yes, it is a beautiful drive along the 89A.

We have been to the Grand Canyon so it's not like we haven't seen it before but if we see it again we would like to spend a little more time there rather that a dash and run visit.

  3. I gotta say that that camping spot looks pretty darn cold but, the view of the mountains is outstanding! Bummer that you will miss the Grand Canyon but I doubt it is going anywhere. Looking forward to that recipe. Safe travels. Grace (in Tucson)

    1. Actually, not that cold. It went down to about 36F (2C) last night, and they're calling for an overcast high of 56F (13C) today and into the sunny 60's by Saturday. Just need to put a sweater on when we go for a hike. :-)

    3. The hike we wanted to do didn't happen the way we wanted it too, more on that in today's post. We still enjoyed our time here though.

  4. Some things you do not share. In my case it's my food and the other is an occasionally good boondocking spot.

    1. Well we would probably have shared this one but it was given to us with the promise of not revealing it so we will stand by our promise. At this time of year we were the only ones but I bet in the summer it is probably busy here and the less people know it the better.

  5. That's a beautiful site for sure, but I'm not fond of snow or cold weather. Glad it's warming up a little bit for you.

    1. It is really only cold at night, during the day it is a light jacket kind of day so it is actually perfect for hiking.

    1. We are so glad to hear that you are enjoying our blog and we hope that there is some helpful information in it for you.

We are hoping that me might possibly head for Ecuador for a little while next winter but we will see what turns up over the summer before making any actual commitment.

    1. Great minds think alike obviously! :-)

Colombia is another one of our choices or possibly both. Who know what will happen over the summer that help make our choice for next winter.
