What's around the next corner?

A bit of an overcast day yesterday, but still nice...high of around 75F (24C).

We decided to go for a walk, and left around 11:00am. We weren't planning on being gone long...just heading up the road that leads towards the mountain in behind where we're parked. Still, Ruth brought the small backpack with water and snacks because we have been known to get sidetracked sometimes!

I guess this was one of those times!

Looking back at Lake Roosevelt.

Red Tailed Hawk? Just a guess...

Out for a hike.

Eventually, there was a small turnaround and the road became 4 wheel drive only. Sherman would not have made it this far!

So interestingly, there are really only three possible camping spots along this road, and Sherman got the best one!

We had hiked maybe an hour and it had been a slow gradual uphill. We were thinking of turning around, but it always looked like there was going to be something more interesting around the next corner!

Starting to get some nice views.

Where we decided to turn around.

An odd section of the road where the dirt changes color.

Ruth spotted this snake skin, right near a hole in the ground. I bet it was sleeping in there!

We didn't get back until after 2:00pm! I worked out our route online afterwards and we had done 5.5 miles (8.5 kms) with an altitude gain of 1,100 ft. Good workout!

Relaxed for the afternoon. I even had a nap for an hour! In the evening, we did a 3.5 lb sirloin tip roast in the oven. Sure do love our full size RV gas oven. The smell of it cooking was wonderful! Plus, having the oven on keeps us toasty warm because it did get down to 38F (3C) outside last night. What a good meal, and with lots of leftovers. We had bought it on sale for $3.99 per lb.

Going to change Ruth's bike inner tubes this morning and then go for a bike ride down to the lake.

Anybody ever used one of these? I think we're going to order one...

Have a great day!

    1. We are loving it here, we have a beautiful 360 degree view and not another soul near us.

  2. Looks like it has a "belly band" so I'm thinking your red-tail guess is right. Great views.... sounds like a great day.

    1. That's for the confirmation. We aren't birder's so it isn't very easy for us to identify some of these birds.

  3. So much desert to explore and always some new sights to see.

    1. It would take us ages to try and explore all of Arizona, so yes every day is a new day for us.

  4. I know a few RVers who have that washer. They use it in a 5 gallon pail and it works great.

    1. We have heard many good things about it, guess we will find out when we get ours.

  5. I'm surprised you didn't poke in that hole to see if the snake was in there. :cD

  6. I saw that photo of Ruth at the fork in the road and thought "uh oh!" LOL! I think I would have snatched that snake skin and made a hat band out of it. That's a beauty! What a lovely camping spot. I'm paying close attention because I think I'm going to learn a bit about how to find these perfect spots while you two travel AZ. So your oven is full size? That might explain why everything burns in mine and you manage to make such great meals (plus, I think you have way more talent for that kind of thing!). I've got to get a grip on this teeny, tiny oven experience. Safe travels! Grace (in Tucson)

    1. Nope we didn't get lost! ;-)

We did grab for that bit of snake skin but it was very old and fell into two pieces quite easily.

The internet is a great resource and so are other people's blogs who do boondocking. There are lots of places out there.

Yes, I love our oven and I can't image boondocking without it. There is always trial and error when it comes to an RV oven. The more you use it the better you get to know it. I may be good at the cooking thing but you have an amazing talent with your painting and bead work.

  7. Looks like you covered some great terrain! ewww on the snake!

I miss the bigger propane oven we had in our travel trailer, it even had two racks in it. Our motorhome only has a micro/convection oven and I would have to sacrifice three nice drawers to put in a stove/oven unit in here. We did buy a Coleman Instastart Oven we can set out on the picnic table if we want, but it takes smaller pans and trays.

    1. I couldn't survive without our oven. I think I would give up those three drawers if I didn't have an oven. I have seen you with your little Instastart Oven and as long as it helps you bake then that is better than nothing.

  8. Looks like an over engineered toilet plunger. If you want to wash just get a bucket with a tight lid put water, detergent and some clothes in, snap on the lid and put in the shower in the morning. By the time you stop driving at the end of the day, the clothes have sloshed around in the 5 gal bucket and are ready to rinse. Just rinse and dry on the clothes line.

    1. Yep, that is pretty much what it is. There are instructions somewhere on the internet for making your own out of a plunger but I have heard that they don't last as long. We have also heard about doing the covered pail thing but that is only good if you are going to be driving. It doesn't help when you are sitting still for any length of time. We have heard many good things about these hand washing plungers and that they work really well without a ton of effort, so I think we will be getting one for ourselves.

    2. I think it would be great to have one, too. They are like a toilet plunger on steroids!
