The package arrived!

Actually, it was there the entire time! The shipper had made an error, and had listed my name on the package instead of our friend Doug's name. So of course we're all looking for a package addressed to Doug, not me! When Doug went down to check on them, it was purely by chance that he noticed a package with the last name "Read" on it, and they realized it was mine.

So, that all came together, and it wasn't Amazon's fault, nor was it the fault of the USPS.

And so I quickly installed the new electronics board in our water heater, and as expected it works perfectly. We don't use our water heater very often, preferring to heat water on the stove as necessary. But it sure does come in handy when you want to have a quick shower!

We had decided that if the package showed up, we would head out. So it was time to show Sherman some new scenery. We were heading for Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and there's a fairly inexpensive campground there.

We said goodbye to Doug, and headed on out towards to the eastern side of Yuma.

The highway exiting Imperial Dam goes right through the Yuma Proving Grounds where they test military equipment.

We're really not interested, so we didn't stop at the information display.

That's a funny lookin' RV!

We made a stop at the relatively new Fry's grocery store on the eastern edge of Yuma. What a zoo! It was too busy for our liking, so we quickly grabbed what we needed. Checked a few prices along the way and it's definitely more expensive than Walmart on an overall basis, although there were some deals to be had if you know your prices. We picked up a top sirloin roast for $3.99 a pound! Oh, and eggs for $0.99 a dozen.

And then we got on Interstate 8, heading east. We went through one low pass, and then it was a boring drive.

Steep downhill coming up.

So, they warn you that its a steep downhill. Then, they warn you that it's a fairly sharp curve. Amazing how many skid marks there were on this curve. I mean, it's not like they weren't warned!

There were rows of this stuff planted out here beside the highway. No idea what it is.

Boring. No wonder we don't like the Interstate. But sometimes there's no choice in Arizona.

Near Gila Bend there's a huge parabolic solar farm.

Eventually, we got onto the 85 heading south. A few more interesting spots. Gotta clean the windshield this morning!

As we approached Ajo, we turned left to head towards their Municipal Golf Course. We had read that you can overnight in their parking lot for $3. But we also saw the sign for their local airport, so we pulled in there first. One guy was in a hangar working on his plane, and I asked if anybody would care of we parked here for the night. "Sure, I don't see why not. Surprised more people don't" was the answer.

Nice.

Sherman, parked up for the night at Ajo airport.

Yesterday's drive, 165 miles (264 kms).

  2. You're back in one of our most fav spots! Ajo is such a cool little town. Neat that they allowed you to stay at the airport. Quick question...how do you get Amazon stuff delivered to you? I've been battling this for years while boondocking. A few UPS stores will accept (for a price), but you can't specify ship method on Amazon so I have never been able to use USPS.

    1. Hi Nina. With Amazon, you have to know someone. At the Imperial Dam LTVA, the Christian Service Center operates a post office that accepts all packages. Also, we are active members of couchsurfing, so we can easily contact a member there and use their name and mailing address so that we can pick up a delivery as we pass through their area. Or, rather than using a UPS store address where you have to pay, use a UPS depot address where they'll hold your package for free.

  3. Did any planes land or take off during the night? That would be my only concern overnighting at an airport.

    1. Nope, very quiet. A guy showed up at about 6:30am to get his plane ready, and was in the air by 7:30am. Other than that, it was totally quiet. We've overnighted at a few small airports in the past and never had a problem.

    2. Ingenious! A great feature of airports is that they are always paved---especially useful in wet weather.

  4. We passed that solar farm on our recent trip to Yuma - quite impressive. Also impressive that you were allowed to camp overnight in the airport parking lot.

    1. We though so too, especially because it is so different from the normal solar farms.

Many of these municipal airports are small so they don't mind you staying overnight in their little parking lot, also most don't have planes arriving at night so there is no worry about having too much noise. This spot was fantastic as it was totally peaceful at night.

  7. We first wandered into that area back in January of 06 & loved it right away. We have many fond memories from around Ajo & Why. Love that Ajo Mountain loop drive in Organ Pipe. Nice little RV Park behind the Casino in Why. It was the first RV Park we ever stayed at longer than a couple days back then. Desert is right at your door for long walks. Park is called Hickiwan Trails.

    1. Thanks Al, we will keep that campground in mind. We sure enjoyed our day around Ajo yesterday.

Do you think the 21 mile, Ajo Mountain Drive can be done in the motorhome?

  8. Ajo and Why are on our list to visit as we travel eastward. Thanks for the parking information.

    1. You definitely need to stop by and see Ajo, it is a really pretty little town and very friendly people. Not so sure about Why, we just drove by but didn't really see a town as such but maybe we just missed the turn off into town. I am sure that you would love Organ Pipe Cactus NM as well.
