Bugs and beach

That's about how our day went yesterday. The sand fleas and/or noseeums are so bad, that you can't really sit outside your RV and enjoy the fresh air. And if you sit inside, you had better close up all the windows because those little buggers will come right through your screens and attack you.

And they're so tiny that you won't even see it coming.

This whole area (San Blas and the Matanchen Bay) is targeted for tourist expansion, and with a new toll highway being completed between Tepic and the bay itself, it's well on it's way to attracting beach goers by the hundreds. That should make the noseeums very happy!

It's too bad about the bugs. The beach and bay are really pretty and the water is shallow for 100 yards and easy to swim in.

The beach sand is so hard that you can easily drive on it. This ice cream guy drives up and down the beach all day long on weekends.

Umm. Don't get too close to the water though! This dummy drove right through where there's a river emptying into the bay. Expect it to be a little soft in those area! Returning from our walk, a tow truck had just finished pulling him out.

You can walk for miles!

We started on the far side across the bay!

This is Playa las Islitas. (Small Islands Beach).

Beautiful bay.

But, the bugs are horrible. We can't figure out why anybody would come here. Or buy property here. The beachside restaurants have a few people at them on weekends. We stopped for a cold drink and they actually supplied us with bug repellent!

Heading further north this morning. No idea where we're stopping for the night.

  1. Gosh.....it sounds just like when we were in Florida this past spring. It was crawling with them and you start to even feel them in your hair!! Same thing for us, we had to sit INSIDE the van with the windows closed. They came right through the screens so I imagine that they are the same type of pests!!! Beach looks gorgeous but if you have to walk around with a mosquito suit on it takes away from the fun, doesn't it??!!

    1. It wasn't bad at all if we were walking on the beach. But around the motorhome, they were terrible. Same thing at the beach front restaurants. Terrible! Never again...I have at least 50 bites...:-(

  2. Beautiful surroundings - too bad about the biting insects - that's a bummer! We have noseeums at our fav outside bar/restaurant in Delaware during the summer. They serve cans of bug spray with their Jack & Cokes!!!

    1. It really was a pretty area and I know that we could have found quite a bit to do in the area but the bugs really did ruin it! Noseeums and mosquitoes, why do we need them?

  3. We do have noseeums here but only for about an hour at sunset and again early in the morning. Them sometimes we get lucky and don't have them at all.

    1. Agreed, they are better here, although I still had to put the bug spray on for that little bit of time this evening when we were sitting outside but yes, otherwise they were definitely better.

  4. Do you think the bugs could be a seasonal thing following the wetter rainy season? Hopefully they aren't around all the time.

    1. Janis, I have no idea, you would have to hope that they aren't around all the time! I don't know how the locals would deal with them constantly like that?!
