A fiesta in town!

There was to be a parade in town yesterday morning, but it was supposed to start at 9:00am. We were a little late getting going, so we missed the parade but we still saw most of the participants in the central plaza of Valle de Juarez.

I should tell you a little more about this little town.

There are 4,006 inhabitants. That's what the sign says as you enter town, anyhow! But I think it has said that since we started coming here four or five years ago.

Valle de Juarez is located about 400 kms (248 miles) east of Puerto Vallarta.

And about 150 kms (93 miles) south of Guadalajara.

Valle de Juarez is in the mountains of the state of Jalisco. We love the temperature here at this time of year. Mostly clear blue skies and a temperature around 25C (77F). We're at about 6,500 ft altitude though, so it does get a bit chilly at night, sometimes down to 5C (41F) or so, but it warms up nicely before 10:am. And it's the perfect temperature for sleeping in the motorhome.

They have a lot of fiestas and parades at Valle de Juarez. Yesterday was the celebration of spring.

Most of the town must have been there.

Lots of food.

"El Centro" is a beautiful place in Valle de Juarez.

Pirates? What does that have to do with spring?

Lots of people on horses. This is a very rural community.

This little one looks a bit more "spring" like!

Some got out their traditional outfits.

And some of the ladies were all dressed up too.

We had to buy some meat for supper, but the carnecerias (butcher shops) were all closed due to lent. During lent, you're not supposed to eat meat on Fridays. But there were a few stands set up with fish for sale, so we had talapia fillets for dinner.

Back at the campground, the other four couples were all getting ready to head out Saturday morning. They're doing a small caravan up to the border and stopping at Guanajuato for a couple of nights. We didn't have so far to go (just down the road!) so it didn't take us much to get ready. Sherman's engine battery was flat though, so it may be due for replacement. I got enough of a charge in it (I hope) to start the engine Saturday morning, so we'll see if it holds a charge overnight.

We enjoyed one last happy hour with the crew here, and they all headed out of here this morning. We'll check out the new RV Park just down the road a little closer to town, and then on Monday or Tuesday we'll head to Delia's RV Park near Etzatlan.

  1. Why does our US government tell us how dangerous it is to go to Mexico? The area you are in looks like any area in the southern US. I don't get it...

    1. We don't understand it either, it is no more dangerous than anywhere else in the world unless of course you are in the drug business or a gang. Like anywhere else you need to be aware of your surroundings and don't do stupid things!

  2. Nice of them to throw a "Welcome Home" parade for you. Shows that not only Sherman missed you! :c)

  3. Wait, you mean they started the parade ON TIME? I had problems staying focused enough to read after that.

  4. Looking forward to hearing about the new RV park down the road. LOVE the look of the current one in your top photo...too bad it is no longer going to be as nice with the Pemex station right there. Safe travels!

    1. Barb and Sal did a beautiful job on Hacienda Contreras and they were sad to give it up but it just wasn't the same once the Pemex went in next door and their heart just wasn't in it anymore. The current park will still be open from what we hear but the owner doesn't seem to want an active role in it and with Barb and Sal not looking after it, it just won't be the same.

We think that Chema's will now be the go to place here in Valle de Juarez and the campers will then have interaction with the locals and an easier walk into town. I am sure Barb and Sal will make appearances as well.

    1. It was sad to say goodbye to the old park, it looks so beautiful now with all the trees so big and the flowers. We will still have to go by for a look at Whiskey's tree every time we are in the area. We will make new memories at Chema's, it will be smaller but I think it will have a personality of it's own.

    1. We do feel like we are back home, more so than when we return to Canada. Sorry that Suzie, doesn't want to come down and visit again but it looks like you have a great time anyway.
