Another weekend gone

Seems we're back at the point where we're only going to be busy on the weekends here at the campground. Quite a few empty spots this morning as the weekend campers went home yesterday. We had a family reunion group up in the overflow area, but they were pretty easy to look after as they policed themselves and all we had to do was to drop firewood in two piles and empty their trash cans.

This time of year is also apparently when you start to get tired of it all. Probably because you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Speaking with the people who have worked the registration desk and the restaurant the last couple of years, everybody starts to feel the same around this time. You just want the campers to go home. But, you still have to smile and chat when you deliver the firewood, and wave at the kids as you pass by. After all, there's at least five weeks to go yet!

We haven't had a decent rain in almost three weeks now, and there's none in the forecast. Supposed to be a nice week though, with highs around 25C (78F). For working, we really don't want it any warmer than that.

Our lake water level is now at it's lowest point that we've ever seen it. Hard to believe that at the end of June it was right up to the base of the little white shed in the picture above!

But, at least with the lack of rain our grass doesn't grow much! We had a part time guy helping with the grass cutting and weed whacking, but I told him at the beginning of August that we wouldn't have any more work for him. Ruth and I can keep up with things ourselves so there's no need to spend campground money on more labor if we don't have to.

White pelicans on Sturgeon Lake.

We sure get some interesting sunsets up here.

Tonight is supposed to be the best night to view the Perseid meteor shower. And with clear skies in the forecast, is should be a real show. There's supposed to be one to two "shooting stars" per minute, and we've got pretty much zero light pollution up here so we're going to stay up late tonight and try and get some night pictures of the sky.

  1. It does seem that once the middle of August hits we all think that summer is coming to an end..

  3. Lovely shots. I don't like that come August 1st the stores start selling winter clothing and of course school supplies. I prefer to enjoy the next 4 to 6 weeks of great wearther.

  4. Hopefully the campground owners will let you leave in five weeks. After all the great work you've done there this season, I'd be worried they might hold you hostage until you promise to come back next season... :cO

  5. Pelicans? We never see them here in the Vancouver area. I thought they were more a tropical bird. Interesting.

  6. I have yet to see the Perseid meteor shower. It's either overcast or I'm not quite willing to stay up until the wee hours. In Vienna the best viewing was at something like 3:00 a.m. Right!
Once again in these parts it's overcast.
Are you going to try and get some photos?
I'm sure the campground directors (or whatever they call themselves) would want you to come back next year. Of course, now that you know what's involved, maybe you'd be a bit reluctant?

  7. I can imagine that once you see that light at the end of the tunnel, staying focused can be an issue:)

  8. I sure hope you get some good pictures. I can get up to see the sunrise but no matter how hard I try my eyes just close before midnight. Beautiful pelican and sunset pictures!
