Beer

Sorry for the late blog post today! But it was totally out of my hands...they turned the power off at 8:02am, and it didn't come back on until almost noon!

They were replacing some of the hydro poles on the other side of the road from Ruth's Dad's house. They actually got it done pretty quick considering what they were doing. But with no electricity and a bit of rain coming down, it was a long three and a half hours for us!

Reason for our late update today!

Yesterday afternoon, we went into Ottawa with Ruth's Dad because he had a doctor's appointment. I dropped him and Ruth off at the hospital and I went and picked up our mail. We have a UPS box number that holds our mail for us. Then, I went to Staples and bought a memory card for the new camera. It was a 4GB card on sale for $7.99. Not bad.

Picked Ruth and Tony up on the way back through and decided to cross the bridge into Quebec to pick up a couple of boxes of beer. Of course you can buy beer in Ontario, but you have to buy it at a monopoly beer store where unionized employees are overpaid to hand you your box of beer. I don't play that game, so I cross the bridge into Quebec where you can buy beer at a corner store or grocery store for approximately a 25% discount.

The funny thing was, out of all the beers I liked, the one with the best value was Sol...a Mexican brand! 12 bottles for $12.99 plus tax and deposit. So I bought 4 cases of 12 (48 bottles) to make it worth my while. Came to $60 in total. Compare that to the great Ontario Beer Store monopoly...

Same amount of beer would have cost $20 more in Ontario!

So, happy with my beer purchase we headed back across the bridge in Ontario. Illegally, since you are not allowed to cross provincial borders with alcohol due to some stupid regulation dating back probably 100 years ago. It's obviously not enforced, but then why is it on the books? Who knows.

On our way across the bridge, Ruth noticed a nice little car parked on one of the islands so we drove down to have a look.

Nice view of downtown Ottawa from the island.

Nice view of a Lamborghini. The girl owner was a head turner too!

Made it back to Galetta before dinner. Here's some pictures around the area...

Tony (Ruth's dad) and K.C., his dog.

Ruth with some nice horses.

Kevin, happy with his imported Mexican beer!

Time to vote! Gotta keep at it for three more weeks!

Thanks for helping us to win a trip to Australia!

  1. What kind of stove/oven is that behind you?

  2. It is a wood cookstove. It is used mainly for heating up the kitchen and family area in the winter. My Mum used to do a lot of cooking on it in the winter rather than the electric stove.

  3. Good deal on the beer, you can still get Miller High Life Lite at our Shop & Save in Dardenne Prairie for $14.47US a 30 pack.now that is the cheap way to drink beer. My Grandma had a coal range like your Mums in her front kitchen that used to heat the whole first floor on a single shovel of coal, a small shovel at that. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna...

  5. Not bad for the Sol beer. I have been buying Laker Light or Laker Lager at the Beer store in Ontario only $29.95 for 24 bottles plus you get a free King can of Laker Ice inside, not bad beer either.

    Howdy,
I did my duty for the day, I VOTED!! Why would anybody take chance of illegally hauling lite-beer across the state lines?? If you'd have bought REAL BEER it might have been worth it!! As the ONLY TEXAN to have served as my daddy said, of the stuff they palm-off as 'lite-beer', "they shoulda left it in the mule!! As for the gal in the funny-looking car, who would look at her while Ruth was around??
Do the French-Canadians really SELL BEER?? That's against the law!!

Some people refer to the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) as the KGBO.

  11. We sold our Enterprise wood cookstove last Fall. It was made in New Brunswick. I thought for a minute that this stove was the same as our old one. We really missed it this winter. The new Jotul airtight modern stove just is not the same !!
