Aguascalientes

Got up just before 7:00am, and we were pretty much ready to go. Barb and Sal were at the gate ready to say goodbye when we drove out around 7:30am. We had a GREAT time at Hacienda Contreras, and we look forward to spending more time there next year.

We drove 300 kms (186 miles) today, making it to the city of Aguascalientes around 2:30pm. We stopped for a few breaks, so it wasn’t really that slow going. There was one section of road we took that was in terrible condition and it was very slow going for about 25 kms (15 miles). That one section took about an hour! Sherman breathed a sigh of relief after that bumpy section was over! Then, we were on a very nice toll highway for the last part.

Aguascalientes is a big enough city, at a population of about 850,000 people. The Medrano hotel and convention centre has a few RV parking spots but is only three blocks from el Centro (downtown) so we were a little nervous about driving into a large city and being able to get around, but it’s a fairly modern city and the main road leading into town is wide and easy to navigate.

We got ourselves set up around a square that has some fruit trees and picnic tables. There are some 15 amp outlets, and water hookups, but we’re only staying for the night so don’t need any services. The cost is 150 pesos ($12.60) whether you hook up or not. We are not far off a very busy street, but cannot hear the traffic at all.

Aguascalientes is not really a tourist destination, but it is supposed to have a historic district with some interesting architecture so we’ll go for a walk around tomorrow morning before we leave. Nissan has a large manufacturing facility here, in fact we drove by it on the way into town this afternoon. It is the largest Nissan plant outside of Japan, and produces all the Nissan Sentra’s for worldwide distribution.

  3. Lovely overnight spot! Our time in Aguascalientes was spent in a Pemex. We set up camp, lawn chairs and all. Our radiator had died and we had no choice. Lovely town with many friendly, helpful people, especially the police who got us a mechanic on a Sunday!

  4. Sam and Donna...We were nervous going so close to the centro of such a big city but the roads are wide and easy to drive. That was a good idea about the plant. Not enough time to check on it though, so maybe next time we come through it would be something to look into. Thanks for the idea.

Dave...We enjoyed Aguascalientes and wouldn't mind returning. We will put that movie on our list of movies to watch. Thanks!

Contessa...So glad things worked out for you. I hope you got to go into town and see some of the sights while you had the repairs done.

Kenny and Angela...It was very nice and very quiet.
