Solar, batteries, and inverter...works great!

I didn't work at the RV place today because I was asked to do the morning drive for the blood courier as well as the afternoon. I didn't mind...it was a beautiful day for driving. And it meant I had almost two hours for lunch...and because it was a bright sunny day, I decided to test Sherman's new inverter setup.

So I plugged in the shore cable to the inverter and flicked it on. The batteries were fully charged, so there was just a trickle of amps flowing in...until I flicked the switch. Then the charge controller let the full 9.6 amps flow into the batteries because I had the fridge running through the inverter.

Then, I warmed up some of Ruth's fantastic ham and pea soup (deeelicious!) in the microwave, and then toasted a bagel in the toaster. Everything ran perfect off the batteries and inverter. Then Ruth showed up and did the same thing for her lunch.

I've had some people tell me that it wouldn't be worth our while to run the fridge off the batteries and the inverter, but once we get the third solar panel installed I think that on a sunny day it will be no problem at all!

I'm impressed with this whole idea of being electrically self sufficient!

  4. Wow, the freedom of solar. When we get our new rv that is the first project. A generator provides freedom but solar, quiet, clean, free energy.

The Siena by CT Coachworks has a residential fridge and they tout running it on battery for 1.5 days.
