Kingston, Ontario

Friday May 15…9:30pm

Okay, time for an update. After writing this journal almost every day for the last 18 months, I needed a break!

I got a job…parts department at an RV dealership. I wanted to be in the service department, but now that I’ve been there for a week or so, this is going to be okay. And, it’s cycling distance from the KOA where we’re staying, so it’s actually ideal. In fact, I road my bike back and forth today for the first time. Five and a half kilometres takes me 20 minutes each way. Major bonus is that I get a nice discount on parts. Not that we need anything, but there are some things we’d like to get before we leave here in the fall.

We’ve already put a few miles on the car driving back and forth to Ruth’s parents and I made one trip to Ottawa. Ruth has gone today to pick up our son, Alex from school in New York, and drop him off at her parents place. It’s worked out that our schedules both have us with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off, so we have our weekend in the middle of the week!

Our daughter Lindsey was in Ottawa this week, and it was nice to visit with her for a couple of days. We’ll be doing a road trip to Nova Scotia next month to visit her for a couple of days our there. Unless there is a flight special…then maybe we’ll fly.

We’ve had sticker shock being back in Canada. Groceries are a LOT more expensive here than they are in the US or Mexico. Same with beer, gas, taxes, hmmmm…everything really. After having been in the US and Mexico for an extended time, I have become a little disillusioned about the thinking that Canada is such a great country. Maybe we just tell ourselves that to cushion the blow everytime we actually pay for something.

It’s different being parked up in one spot. Already, after only a couple of weeks, I miss the “vagabond” lifestyle.
