On the beach (day 6)...Climbing a hill

Wednesday December 26...9:45pm

Since we arrived at this spot, we had wanted to climb the biggest hill in the area, which happens to overlook the bay. By the time we set off, it was already 10:30am. There wasn't much of a trail, so to speak, but you could
definitley tell that others had been up there before us many times. As we crossed the highway, we spotted one of Mexico's many stray dogs also trying to cross the highway. But he noticed us in the process, and that made him pay less attention to crossing the road than he should have. Fortunately the road wasn't very busy, but we still had to turn away a few times to avoid watching what we thought might be a terrible sight. As we got into the brush on the other side, the dog (Buddy, we called him) kept ahead of us, looking too shy to get very close. We had been told to follow the river bed until you see the drainage gulley coming down from the hills and then the path up pretty much follows the drainage path. It seemed like "Buddy" had been up here before and was heading that way himself. He eventually got brave enough to come and give Whiskey a sniff, and even let me pet him. Seemed like a nice friendly dog, but the problem is that if you befriend these stray dogs, they never leave you alone. He was with us all the way on our hike...3 hours from start to finish. And then we couldn't get rid of him. Eventually, I got angry with him and sent him down a road towards a ranch house on the other side of the highway, but sure enough as we approached our beach, we saw him running up from behind. This could become a problem! Maybe one of the others will start to feed him and then he'll become their problem.

Ruth has been busy ever since people found out she does hair. Many of the longer term campers don't like going into town to get their hair done because the stylist typically doesn't speak English...so having Ruth here to do it on the beach has been a good thing for them. Ruth has almost made enough today to pay our camping fees for the next week! One of the guys traded her a haircut for 5 gallons of drinking water and a painting he did on a sea shell. Also this guy and his wife are going into town tomorrow and they're going to pick up a few items for us. Everybody is so helpful here. We've decided to stay past the New Year.

And then to top it all off, the neighbours on the other side of Glen and Steve invited the four of us over to their place for dinner. Had a delicious seafood rice stir fry.
